Anxiety Disorders

Are You Wondering if You Have an Anxiety Disorder?

There are different types of Anxiety Disorders including:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Symptoms include severe tension that interferes with their daily functioning. They worry constantly and feel helpless to control their worries. They may have trouble sleeping, concentrating and/or have muscle tension.

Panic Disorder
The primary symptom is having a panic attack in which the person might experience physical and psychological distress in the form of symptoms such as a pounding heart, chest pain, sweating, trembling and/or shaking, a fear of losing control, “going crazy” or dying.

Postraumatic Stress Disorder
This disorder occurs in people who have survived a severe or terrifying physical or emotional event, such as being in combat, rape or imprisonment. Children of parents who have had such trauma may be affected as well. People with PTSD may experience recurring nightmares, flashbacks, or even flashbacks in which the event seems to be happening all over again.

A phobic is an excessive and persistent fear of a specific object, event or activity. There are different forms, such as

  • Specific phobia- such as fear of flying, or fear of snakes
  • Social phobia- fear of public speaking, social activities, or using a public restroom.
  • Agoraphobia- fear of being in a situation/situations in which it is feared that escape might be difficult or embarrassing. If severe, an individual may become afraid to leave their home.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessions are upsetting and irrational thoughts that don’t seem to stop and cannot be controlled through reassurance or reasoning. To reduce these obsessions, a person might engage in repetitive behaviors (compulsions) such as hand washing or checking to make sure the door is locked.
